The Toy Collection

My paintings are of iconic characters from comics and children's books. There is very often a story behind the image which at times needs to stay private. They are painted on top of a collaged surface of books and/or comics relating to the character depicted. A coat of white emulsion then covers the collage and painting begins. On completion I tear, rip and scratch into the surface to reveal parts of the collage beneath. I enjoy this process as it reminds me of the torn posters one sees on walls and hoardings as well as commenting on the preciousness of art. The originals are for sale along with signed limited edition giclee prints.

The Boy in the Blue Hat

This painting, exhibited at the Royal West Academy, Bristol, comments on the character of this fictional person. His propensity for getting into trouble, his attraction to fast cars and his relationship to friends. The central arrangement is based on Di Chirico's surreal paintings of objects in a empty town square surrounded by arches and with trains in the background. The cars at the bottom are 5 colour lino prints printed on pages from a book. I collect bubble baths, among lots of other ephemera, and so I have to include them in my work whenever possible. I do think his hat is rather suggestive! The work is painted on collage on a cardboard substrate.

The Kids

I received my first annual in 1966, and was given one every year thereafter in my stocking at Christmas time. The smell of this book still reminds me today of waking up excited on Christmas morning. The book in this painting is that exact one from 1966! As an art teacher I found the classroom cartoon quite appropriate (from a 1950`s annual) and my interest in Pop Art led me to painting it in the comic style on left and right. The work is painted on top of a collage, on a cardboard substrate.

The Victor

Who wins? The pupil or the teacher whenever there is a conflict of some kind? As the pupil raises his fist towards the teacher's groin area, the teacher raises his hands in victory, neither knowing that the other one believes that they are the victor. A pencil with no lead comments on the uselessness of such a debate. I'm still trying to learn French, something I should have been better at in school, and that disappointment remains with me today. The painting is in acrylic on a collage background, on top of a cardboard substrate.
